The tower of Babel myth is based on the practice of the ziggurat, a type of large religious structure built around Mesopotamia. They were the biggest structures built, religious temples. Different cities would get into a sort of competition with each other, to see who's could be the biggest and highest. Thus the legend of the tower built to the heavens. No doubt back then a tower eight stories or more high seemed impossibly large compared to the relatively stunted trees and one to two story buildings of the rest of the area.
I wish I could have seen the original, I don't think it's a myth, it explains so very much about our modern understanding of language, dispersal on planet, ect. post flood. People were capable of great engineering marvels, such as the pyramids, even back then. If your interested, go to creation.com for interesting articles on it.
Wonderful painting BTW, close to my mental picture of it
Nice work. I'm particularly fond of the texture of the clouds. Despite their dark and foreboding qualities, they retain a sort of light fluffiness. I'm kind of questioning your decision to actually show the top of the building, though. I understand that it's still under construction, but it stunts the impact of the truly massive structure the tower of babel's supposed to be. I think you've achieved huge, but you're falling a bit short of immense.
yeah I had that debate when I was painting it. And I do agree that when you see the top, it looks smaller (compared to if it was covered by clouds). But it's part of the lore I guess, that since it's supposed to be unfinished, it does fall short of something y'kno?
Good work! Really like the lighting on it.
